History
The Tibetan Association of Northern California (TANC), was founded on July 6, 1990. TANC's original founders consisted of 11 Tibetans and one non-Tibetan spouse. TANC was officially registered as a non-profit organization in 1994. The founders of TANC shared a common vision of establishing a single community-based organization to meet the needs and aspirations of all Northern Californian Tibetans. In keeping with this common vision, TANC founders chose as the organization's motto: Unity of purpose; Strength in diversity and selected as its logo, the legendary Four Harmonious Friends from traditional Tibetan mythical folk tales.
Mission
TANC's mission is to pursue with dedication the common goal of the Tibetan people including activities to promote the Tibetan language and culture-under the guidance and leadership of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and recognizing and respecting the Central Tibetan Administration as the legitimate representative of the Tibetan people.
Current Status
The TANC Office/Community Center is located in Richmond CA. TANC has no branch offices. TANC has a membership of approximately 3,000 Tibetan residents and friends of the community in Northern California.
